Before Hallmark existed, Geoffrey Chaucer invented Valentine's Day with a 14th-century English poem called The Parliament of Fouilles, c. 1382. This circular emblem crowds four birds around a thorned heart, perched on bare branches like they're debating who gets the girl. The original Valentine, apparently, was a nature documentary with better writing.
